Maria was friends with Jackson Elias and received an urgent telegram asking for her help. In a conversation at a speakeasy with Lance, she tells him what’s got her so wrung up and he says he knows a guy who can help. Eric, who was in town, didn’t want his cousin to be left alone with a strange man and joined them. They meet up with Cornelius and hire him to look into the matter. Meanwhile, John is looking for a runaway patient and also hires Cornelius to locate her. Once the lost patient was located, Cornelius asked for help with the Elias case from a psychological standpoint. Upon learning Lance was involved, John, never one to be out-staged by Lance yet again, joins in on the investigation.
Jackson Elias sent an urgent telegram to Maria Whitmore, a local friend of his. He asked her to meet him on January 15th and to bring friends if she could. She lamented over this in a local speakeasy and half-drunkenly shared her ‘troubles’ with a man she met there named Lance Starr. As an archaeologist he was familiar with the name and looking for any excuse to avoid going to the boring conference he was in town to attend, he suggested to Maria that he could introduce her to a local private investigator that he knew named Cornelius Stone. They agreed to go the following afternoon.
The next morning Maria was visited by her cousin, Eric Swanson. He hoped to convince his cousin to invest in his movie studio but as they talked she told him about her plans to later that day meet with a man she just met in a bar last night and go visit one of his friends. Not liking how that sounded at all, Eric decided to ‘stick around’ his cousin and join her in this visit.
Meanwhile, Psychiatrist John Skelton had a problem: One of his mentally disturbed female patients had failed to show up for a scheduled session and he was worried. The police weren’t helpful so John sought out a private investigator to help him. He visited Cornelius Stone and met his secretary/partner, Lucy Gibson. They agreed to take his case and John was leaving when Lance, Maria and Eric arrived.
Lance and John had some bad blood between them which went back to their college days and involved a girl. When John saw Lance here he decided to stick around to hear what Lance was involved with. Once Maria told them about her telegram and its contents John quickly offered his services to them as a psychologist, more so because of his rivalry with Lance than because of any altruism. Cornelius however declines to help right away because of the new case he just took on for John. But when the missing girl was described Eric revealed he met her last night and she was probably still at his apartment!
A quick trip solved that mystery, and revealed John’s assistant was also secretly seeing this woman. With that case closed both Cornelius and Lucy agreed to work with Miss Whitmore, and quickly discussed some favorable payment terms which Eric disproved of, but Maria agreed to anyway. Lance, seeing his opportunity to continue to blow off this conference, also agreed to continue to provide his assistance to Miss Whitmore. Eric decided he could not leave his cousin (and her money) alone with so many new people and continued to accompany them as well.
